Leading writers in tough competition for the Citadel journalism award
5/8/2007 12:00 AM

Bruce Cameron, editor of Personal Finance, scooped the overall winner's prize for the third time in the Citadel Words on Money Awards 2007 earlier today. His various entries for the weekly Personal Finance newspaper and the magazine of the same name, earned him the highest overall scoring by all judges. He earned the top prize with the best scores ahead of strong contenders Bruce Whitfield for entries published in FINweek and broadcast on Summit Television, and Stephen Cranston, for various features published in Financial Mail.

"The judges reported that all the entries received for the 2007 award were of a very high standard, making the judging particularly difficult. Many of the entrants are previous winners of the different categories for the award. The quality of reporting on matters related to personal financial issues and investment is excellent, and consumers and investors are spoilt for choice when selecting media for this kind of information," Citadel Chief Executive, Keith Betty, said at the presentation of the awards.

"Betty also announced that the prize money for the 2008 award will be increased. "Full details will be announced in the months ahead," Betty said.

Steven Jones of Moneyweb was the winner of the electronic category for various features about tax published on the internet. The print category prize was awarded to Bruce Whitfield for, amongst others, exceptional features about bank charges published in FINweek.

Regular winner Stephen Cranston of Financial Mail won the Chairman's award for investigative reporting yet again, this time for quality cover stories about the departure of the former Pensions Funds Adjudicator and the unit trust industry.

Julius Cobbett of Moneyweb was awarded the Peregrine Hedge Fund award.

The runners-up in the electronic category were Bruce Whitfield (television) for interviews on Summit Television; Alec Hogg (radio) for interviews broadcast on Moneyweb's power hour; and Vic de Klerk (internet) for features published on the web site Fin24.com.

In the print category runners-up prizes were awarded to Suzette Truter of Sarie (consumer magazines); Laura du Preez of Personal Finance (business magazines); Erika van der Merwe of Moneyweb (daily column); Stephen Cranston of Financial Mail (weekly column); Barry Sergeant of Moneyweb's Business in The Citizen (daily feature); and David van Rooyen of Sake-Rapport (weekly feature).

The judges for the 2007award were:

  • John Arneson, CEO of the Financial Planning Institute (FPI)
  • Prem Govender, Vice President of the Board of the FPI and CEO of CP Naidoo and Partners.
  • Robert Brand of the Pearson Chair of Economics Journalism at Rhodes University.
