Barometer SA

Barometer SA is a series of events hosted by Citadel in conjunction with Business Times. Prominent guest speakers are invited to share and debate their views on a variety of important issues affecting our nation today.

Among the issues under the spotlight is the 2010 Soccer World Cup and what it means for South Africa now and in the years to come. Another significant issue to be debated is the massive gap between the rich and the poor and how this may affect SA’s economic growth. What are the social challenges facing our capitalist society? How can we address our unemployment and poverty to become a stronger nation and what is the role of government and business in achieving this?

Citadel is proud to facilitate these important sessions and we look forward to stimulating and thought-provoking discussions at these events.

Trailblazers

The ‘Trailblazers’ initiative, an ongoing partnership between Empowerdex and Citadel, serves to recognise South Africa’s top black business people and the immense contribution they have made to transformation in this country. As pioneers of Black Economic Empowerment, these individuals have laid the foundation for the leaders of tomorrow to follow in their footsteps and have become inspiring role models for a new generation of young professionals.

Empowerdex conducts intensive research into black management representation on the JSE, and identifies the trailblazers whose achievements should be celebrated. The Trailblazers book, which was launched by Citadel and Empowerdex in 2007, takes an in-depth look at their lives, lessons, journeys and successes and provides important lessons for the trailblazers of the future.

We are very proud to be a part of Trailblazers, and look forward to it growing in stature and momentum year after year.

Lessons from Raymond Ackerman

Citadel’s Claremont office was privileged to host a presentation by one of South Africa’s leading and pioneering retail tycoons. Ackerman’s belief that “You need 90% guts and 10% capital” was at the core of his account on how he founded and built Pick ‘n Pay and created a commercial empire. Now recently retired, this remarkable entrepreneur is able to share his wisdom and solid business principles with future generations and help encourage our country’s entrepreneurial spirit. The evening was one such opportunity to hear his incredible stories of hard lessons and brave decisions.
