INDEPENDENT POLITICAL ANALYSIS
Ever since the spectacular losses by the African National Congress (ANC) in the 2016 Municipal Elections, and more so since the leadership change that saw Cyril Ramaphosa claim the ANC Presidency in December 2017, all eyes have been on the 2019 elections. Will the ANC pay electorally for the chaos and corruption which took place under former President Jacob Zuma? Or will the reputation and remedial actions taken by Ramaphosa be sufficient to restore confidence in voters that the ANC is still the party to lead South Africa to a better future?
The outcome of the election will have a fundamental impact on the country’s future policy and governance. Will Ramaphosa get the result he needs to get his own party off his back and thereby enable him to take more decisive leadership at the helm of government?
