JOHN MARSDEN CFP®
Managing Director: Citadel Financial Protection
I have 26 years financial service industry experience, but I launched my career as an engineer with a BSc (HONS) in applied geology and geomechanics. I worked as a consultant in the oil industry, before immigrating to South Africa in 1982, where I worked on numerous regional engineering projects. In 1991 I joined Liberty Life and occupied various positions during my tenure with the company. I was promoted to Divisional Manager establishing the new Liberty Franchise Academy in 1998, and then in 2002 I took responsibility for the sales and management of Liberty Agency division. In 2004, I moved to Professional Provident Society (PPS) as National Sales Director, as well as Director of PPS Marketing Services Ltd and PPS Namibia Ltd. During this time I was also responsible for the marketing division and short term Insurance business for the organisation. I completed the Management Advancement Programme with Wits University in 1990, became a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) in 1999 and completed the Senior Leadership Development Programme at Manchester University in 2000. I am currently serving as Chairman of the FPI Risk Competency Committee.

BCOM (HONS); Advanced Diploma in Estate and Trust Administration
I joined Citadel as a Risk Advisor in February 2018. Having completed my BCom Honours in Financial Planning at the University of Johannesburg, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Estate and Trust Administration at the University of Free State, I joined ABSA as a Remediation Analyst. This role reinforced my passion for the financial services industry. Then, wanting to be more involved with the people-side of the industry, I joined First National Bank as a Financial Advisor before moving on to being a Fiduciary Specialist. This is an area that I am particularly drawn to, as I believe that in an uncertain world, people need to know that there are experts who have their backs, and will ensure that their wealth will always be taken care of. It is for this reason that I am so excited to continue my financial journey with Citadel, a company with an outstanding reputation for their client-centric approach to investments. When I am not at work I enjoy hiking, sightseeing and playing touch-rugby.

I joined Citadel in January 2018 as a Risk Advisor under the banner of Citadel Financial Protection, a new risk division within the Citadel group. During my 32 years in financial planning, I have been involved in various roles, including Managing Director of Roxburgh Trust, Chairman of Multirand Forum and sitting on various industry boards. These diverse roles have all contributed to my passion and love of our industry. After completing my AFP® qualification in 2002 with the Financial Planning Institute (FPI), I completed my RE5 regulatory exams and an Inseta qualification for Financial Planning. I have also dabbled in property and hold a CIEA qualification. For the last 5 years, I have been an independent contractor with Discovery, and was involved in marketing their full range of integrated products. I believe instant liquidity, via tailor-made risk solutions, enables us to provide peace of mind to our clients, and their loved ones, in the event of death, disability or the diagnosis of a severe illness. In my private life I am married to Cindy, and between us we have four beautiful daughters and one awesome son along with three SPCA rescue animals that dominate our house and bed. I love eating out, playing tennis, watching my wife riding horses…and falling off them, and attending church activities with friends and family.

I became a member of the Citadel family in January 2018 as a Risk Advisor, with the aim of further developing my career through working alongside current and future clients. Coming from a Liberty tied agent background, I am now able to contribute to a platform that ensures the best risk solutions are developed for our clients’ ever-changing needs. Each day further cements my passion for this industry and people, and allows me to draw on the skills I gained during the completion of my honours degree in Industrial Psychology as well as those I gained as a Psychometrist. In working towards achieving “my remarkable”, I plan to complete my NQF 6 followed by attaining my Certified Financial Planner professional accreditation. On a personal level, I am an avid supporter of the Lions rugby team and enjoy partaking in road running events such as the Comrades Marathon.

VAUGHN SCHMIDT CFP®
I believe there are two things that you only have one opportunity to get right in life; your health and your personal finances. Let them get away from you, and it’s incredibly difficult to turn back the clock. I am in a unique position where I have the opportunity to fundamentally impact people’s lives by ensuring my clients have a well-crafted financial plan. I want to help them achieve everything which they can envisage, no matter what obstacle life may put in their way. I became a Financial Advisor by following a genuine intellectual curiosity for the field of Behavioural Finance. The most underrated skill in investing is having control over your emotions. With this in mind, I am able to work with my clients to overcome the behavioural biases which stand in their way. I am incredibly happy to be part of the Citadel family, having recently joined from Discovery. I have a background in Accounting and Economics, and am a Certified Financial Planner, and a Charted Financial Analyst candidate attempting the Level 3 exam this year. When I’m not studying or working, I spend time with my family.

BCOM; LLB; PGDip Financial Planning
I completed a BCom Law degree followed by an LLB at the University of the Free State and graduated in 2015. Having worked in the third party claims industry for four years I have seen the importance of planning for the unexpected. This experience ignited my passion for financial services and the importance of quality financial advice. In 2017 I completed my Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning from the University of the Free State. My family upbringing and values play an important role in my career and I strive to impart these ideals in my day-to-day work life. This compliments my financial planning philosophy as I wish to ensure that my clients’ and their families’ well-being is well taken care of when they need it most – with retirement, death or disability. Outside of work, I am married to Luke. We love the outdoors, being active and playing sport. We also enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
