Job Profile
Junior Database Administrator
Position Purpose
The Junior Database Administrator supports the installation, configuration, monitoring, maintenance and security of the organisation’s database environments to ensure data integrity, availability and performance. Working under the guidance of senior technical staff, the Junior DBA executes routine database operations, responds to service requests and incidents within agreed service levels, and progressively builds the technical expertise required to independently administer production database systems. The role operates across development, test and production environments and contributes to backup and recovery assurance, access administration, performance monitoring and the automation of repetitive operational tasks.
Problems and Challenges
The Junior DBA must exercise a high degree of accuracy when operating on live production data, where a single misapplied change can result in data loss, corruption or extended system unavailability. The role requires balancing competing demands from development teams requiring rapid environment refreshes against the stability and change control requirements of production systems.
A key challenge is diagnosing performance degradation and availability incidents under time pressure, often with incomplete information, and knowing when to resolve independently versus when to escalate to senior specialists. The incumbent must also work within maintenance windows that frequently fall outside standard business hours, while remaining composed during major incidents.
The role further demands continuous learning across a broadening technology landscape spanning on-premises relational platforms, cloud hosted database services and scripting and automation tooling, while maintaining strict adherence to data protection legislation and internal governance standards despite privileged access to sensitive information.
Principal Accountabilities
- Perform routine health checks on database instances, including space utilisation, transaction log growth, scheduled job status and error log review, escalating anomalies in line with defined thresholds.
- Execute scheduled maintenance activities such as index rebuilds and reorganisation, statistics updates and consistency checks, and assist with patching, service pack deployment and version upgrades.
- Monitor daily backup jobs across all supported instances, remediate or escalate failures, and perform periodic restore testing to validate backup integrity and recoverability against defined recovery objectives.
- Assist in maintaining, documenting and testing disaster recovery and high availability configurations, ensuring recovery procedures remain current and executable.
- Monitor database performance metrics and alerting dashboards, identify long running, blocking or resource intensive queries, and contribute to query and index optimisation under senior guidance.
- Administer user accounts, roles and permissions in accordance with least privilege principles, processing access requests through the approved access and change management workflow.
- Support audit and compliance activity through the review of database audit logs, the collection of audit evidence, and adherence to data protection legislation and internal data governance standards.
- Respond to database related service desk tickets within agreed service levels, providing first and second line support to developers, analysts and business users.
- Prepare, submit and implement change requests in non-production and production environments in accordance with change management procedures, ensuring adequate testing and rollback provision.
- Support development and testing teams through database refreshes, data masking and environment provisioning, using repeatable and documented processes.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts for repetitive operational tasks using platform appropriate scripting languages, reducing manual effort and operational risk.
- Create and maintain database documentation, runbooks, configuration registers and knowledge base articles, ensuring they remain accurate and accessible.
- Participate in the after-hours activities, scheduled maintenance and releases and
